Accidental Death of an Anarchist

By Dario Fo

Dario Fo's Farcical Comedy, Accidental Death of an Anarchist (1970) responds to events unfolding in Italy in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Tongue Firmly in cheek, it looks at police corruption and the so called ‘accidental’ death of a railway worker in police custody. Was it an accident or did the officers get carried away?

Dario Fo employs a fast-talking lunatic character simply called ‘Maniac’ who infiltrates police headquarters to explore the truths and half truths of the original events. Posing as a Psychiatrist, an investigating judge and a forensics expert he proceeds to cause chaos and confusion. Accidental Death of an Anarchist is one of Fo's most popular plays both within and outside Italy. It has played around the world over the years to millions of people, a popular choice of directors who want to point to police and political corruption.
